DIYU | 18 Levels of Hell

The Concept

I believe what we do in this life echoes in eternity. Adopting the concept of eighteen levels of hell as the realm of the dead in Chinese mythology. This project visually illustrates the causal relationship between the current’s life shenanigans with the afterlife’s judgments. Borrowing the idea of joss paper as hell bank money to build a relation between hell and present life. I overlay the Chinese paintings and screengrabs of digital news crime headlines onto scanned joss paper to depict the levels of atonement souls should undertake for the sins they committed when they were alive.
